Professor Ezequiel Ramondeda, coordinator at the Centre for Southeast Asian studies at La Plata University’s Institute for International Relations in Argentina appreciated the role Việt Nam plays in the region.

He said this during an interview with Vietnam News Agency in Buenos Aires, prior to the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit 2017 held in Việt Nam.
The decision of the United States to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnerships (TPP) has troubled many of its allies in Southeast Asia, such as Japan and Australia. This has forced them to reconsider their policies towards the United States and other international relations in the context of the United States changing trade policies, with a tendency towards trade protectionism, said Ramondeda.
Japan, Australia and Việt Nam are making efforts to rearrange the situation and propose a TPP agreement without the involvement of the United States.
Việt Nam plays an important role in this process for two reasons, he said. First, Việt Nam is in a strong stage of economic development with many open policies that encourage trade agreements with other economies in the world, and TPP is one such example. The country is also involved in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) negotiations initiated by China, has signed off many agreements with the European Union (EU), and partakes in many others in ASEAN.
Second, since Việt Nam is actively gearing towards trade integration with the world, it has come up with open policies that not only encourage its own economic development but also help to establish regulations for the integration associations that it wishes to be part of. It is one of the few countries that joined both TPP and RCEP, and is actively establishing a trade model for the Asia-Pacific region.
Việt Nam has taken advantage of APEC 2017 to show the world its potential, as well as its ability to overcome challenges and integrate proactively and effectively – in not only political but also economical terms – with the Asia-Pacific region and with the world, said Ramondeda.
Việt Nam is in a strong stage of development that is not limited to the trade area, he said. It is Argentina’s second biggest trade partner in the Asia-Pacific, and the two countries’ strong bilateral relations have been reflected in the exchange of high-level delegations, ministers and specialists. More and more Argentinian tourists are coming to Việt Nam. The two countries’ bilateral relations have grown exponentially in many areas over the past 10 years, especially after the development of a comprehensive partnership.
